Final Lab at St.Mary's!!

In our final lab at St.Mary's we taught pre-k. We first went outside with pre-k and played on the playground with them, and had some great moments out there. Then we went inside and played games we lost a lot of pre-k students at that time but we still continued to play games with the few that were left. At one point we were playing a tag game with the few students we had and it was a fun tag game but the number of students just wasn't working out very well, so I came up with a new game that was quick and easy right on the spot and the students ended up all joining in and playing. At that moment I knew just from working with those kids for that short semester that I had really grown from my experiences. If that was the first day or even the second I would have choked and not known what to do with the students, but this time I really stepped up and I was really proud of myself for that. I enjoyed every minute working with the students at St. Mary's they were wonderful to work with. It was a life changing experience. It made me really realize why I want to become a physical education teacher and that is really important. With the help of my Professor, Professor Yang and all my TA's in the class to really show me the ropes and help me get through the class. I am so thankful for the opportunity.

NYS AHPERD Conference What A BLAST!

The NYS AHPERD Conference was probably one of the best educational experience of my life. I enjoyed every session that I went to, every new person I met, and every new thing I learned. It truly got me so excited and pumped to become a physical education teacher. All of the sessions I went to I will never forget, but there is one or two session that really sticks out in my mind. The first one was a session about dance done by physical education students from the University of Syracuse. In that session they really focus on making your classroom and safe place for your students. Making it safe by making sure every student knows that your classroom is a judgement free zone, be yourself, and dance like no one is looking. So they had us doing a bunch of silly dancing I had so much fun, I could not stop laughing I definitely have not laughed that hard in a long time. The session that stuck out the most to me though was one done by John Smith from Flaghouse. John Smith was a former teacher of the year and now retired and a rep. for Flaghouse. In his session he taught us all these different ways you could use noodles in a physical education class that is fun for your students. He started off with pieces of noodles that were cut into quarter piece and having us pop them in the air and catch them and do different stuff with partners. Then he had noodles that were cut up into circles with those we did a stacking competition with groups using peoples bodies, stacking them on their hands, arms, and head. Then he took out while noodles and showed us a game with them noodle hockey where you use the noodle to play hockey by holding each end of the noodle and it a foam ball. I enjoyed that. The final thing we did in that session was so fun and also very funny. He handed us all half noodles and he did dances with the noodles it was SO fun something kids would love to do. Check out all the videos and picture I posted below.

Thanksgiving at St.Mary's

At our lab number five at St. Mary's the theme was thanksgiving. This week I was part of the gym group with we had to teach the K-1 group and they were a blast. After a couple of games they got a little tired. For my game I did a basketball dribbling activity similar to music chairs but it was musical dribbling with no elimination. So when the music is on the students were dribbling around in a circle when I stopped the music they must find a polyspot as fast as they can and stand on it. I told them that they were turkeys and that the polyspots were their nest so once they got to there once I made them either to a turkey call or flap their wings, then started the music again. The students started getting tired of it so I had them switch it up and dribble low, switch hands, go the opposite way to keep things interesting. Also I added myself in the game for some of the more advance students and had them try to beat me to add that element of competition for those who could handle it. Then after the gym we went downstairs with them for snack time and and games. When I went down there I had a very interesting and memorable experience. After the students ate there snacks we started playing games, I started with legos I notice that one of the little boys I was talking with before where the legos were moved to a different table and was sitting by his self. I went over to him and asked if he wanted to play checkers with me, he said no. Then I asked what was wrong. He said "I'm just having a bad day" so I asked why he proceed to tell me about how every time he ask someone a question they yell at him and no one wanted to play with him. So I starting telling him how everyone has bad days it will be better tomorrow and said "I know how to feel because I asked you to play and you said no." I think then he realized that he should be so down about everything and decided to play checkers with me. While we were setting up another kid came over and asked if he could play with him and his face said it all, you could tell he was so happy about that and it made him feel a lot better, he had that glow on his face. I was very happy to be a part of that.

DO THE CREEP WAH

For a class project our group made a video all about chapter 8 in our book the rudimentary movement abilities chapter. So what are group decided to do was make a music video to the song "The Creep" by Lonely Island. We started by making our own lyrics and incorporating information for the chapter we picked. We brought up topics like stability, locomotion, manipulation, sitting, standing, crawling, reaching, grasping, and releasing. The main topic was doing the creep that was the chorus of our song, then in each verse touch on the each one of the topics I listed above. It was a really great way to learn the chapter I feel like I really understand the material within the chapter. Below is our video made by the Jumping Jack and Jills. Lyrics to the song are on the bottom of the video and also on youtube. ENJOY!

St.Mary's Thank You Collage!

This is my collage for St. Mary's to thank them for giving me the oppurntity to work with the students at the school to help me further my career it was definetly one of the most postive experience I've had the pleasure of experiencing. I will take many things from working there and use to in my future in physical education. I have a soft spot for many of the students they were the biggest factor in the fact that I had such a postive experience. I will never forget St. Mary's the students and the staff THANK YOU!!
